How do I control the weeds?
Due to environmental concerns, we do not advocate the use of Weed control. But, there are times when chemicals should be used. You decide when, we will tell you what to use.
If the tree is already planted:
Use a herbicide such as RoundUp to eliminate weeds. DO NOT allow any chemical to come in contact with your tree seedling. It will readily kill the seedling. Older, more mature trees are not as suceptible. Rule of thumb: keep as much spray off the tree as you can. For our seedlings, we place an old pipe over the tree then spray around it.
If the tree is NOT planted (bare soil/grass):
Use a preimergent such as Precep to eliminate weeds before planting. Plant a hard fescue grass if you wish not to mow frequently.

How do I stake my trees?
1. Use three short stakes, each measuring about four feet long. At a distance of two to three feet from the outside branches, bury the first one at least two feet in the ground into the prevailing wind at a 45-degree angle. Space the others evenly around the evergreen.
2. Use the same amount of wire and hose as described in the steps for staking a deciduous tree, but rather than pulling the wires parallel to the ground, angle them from the height of four feet on the trunk down to the stakes. Twist taut as before. Long eye or U bolts can be used to secure the wire to the stakes, which allow for tightening as needed.

How far apart should I space my trees?
It depends on your purpose. Windbreak, Shade or Asthetics.
Windbreak: Space close. An average space from base to base should be about 8 feet.
Shade: Place close, but not as close as in the windbreak. Average: 10 feet.
Asthetics: Plant the trees around 10-12 feet apart. It depends on the tree species as to how close and your exact needs.
