  • When and how do I sheer/prune?
Sheering should occur in August. You want your evergreen tree to be "finished" growing for the year - having the new growth already stabilized. But, you do not want to prune too late when the temperature gets colder. August is a good time.

Sheering involves shaping - sheering is shaping. You decide whether the tree should be concical or fat. But, make sure you sheer! A tree left unsheered for more than two years will never "look" perfect again (ie it will not be able to be reshaped).

Cut minimal growth around the tree off. On the top, (on the leader or terminal branch), cut right above a bud, about 8" to 10" above the base of the terminal.
